Colin Poole, Acting Director of the WCS Asia Program, is a leading
expert on the birds of Southeast and East Asia. He received a BSc
in Ecology at the University of East Anglia and a Masters in Environment
and Development at the University of London’s School of Oriental
and African Studies. For five years he directed the WCS Cambodia
Program. He set up the program and coordinated with government ministries
to conduct wildlife surveys, establish conservation priorities,
and implement-training programs to assist Cambodians manage their
own natural resources. Colin is a former Chairman of the Oriental
Bird Club and has written extensively on Cambodia’s wildlife,
particularly birds. He is co-author of an illustrated Khmer-language
guide to the birds of Cambodia, the first-ever Khmer language publication
on any aspect of biodiversity or conservation. In February 2003,
the Royal Cambodian Government awarded him a Knight of the Order
of Sahametrei, the first conservationist to be so honored.
